FireFly Forest
Laura Waugh of Firefly Forest has worked as a youth worker for the last eight years in
the voluntary and statutory sectors and has worked within close partnerships with
other organisations. Some of the roles Laura has worked in are Positive Futures –
Northumberland County Councils youth offending agency, the National Trust,
Connexions, Hexham and Corbridge Youth Initiatives, a youth participation worker
for Northumberland County Council, support worker for young people leaving care
or juvenile prison, Gateway into the Community – a charity working with adults with
learning difficulties.

Laura is experienced in working with children and adults of all ages and abilities. After
completing a degree in Childhood Studies & Advice Guidance and Counselling she
began to be interested in outdoor therapy and education, and the positive effects
that the natural environment can have on holistic wellbeing and learning
development. This led her onto her training in Forest School with Archimedies Training
Ltd. From there she acquired many skills such as green woodwork, John Muir
conservation leader, willow weaving and sustainable development education at the
Centre of Alternative Technology. Laura has always been very environmentally aware
and this interest has led her through her Certificate in Permaculture Design in Croatia
in 2010 with the National Permaculture Association and this year she will begin her
Diploma in Permaculture Design.

In 2010 she won a scholarship programme at Allendale Forge Studios and this gave
her the opportunity to concentrate more fully on Firefly Forest. Laura now runs Firefly
Forest from both Northumberland and Hertfordshire.
